A slate roofer for Salford's Victorian streets
A good slate roof can last well over a century, and a lot of slate roofs in Salford are proving it. The trouble is that the iron nails and timber battens holding them haven't aged as well. So they tend to fail in a recognisable way: one slate slips, then a few more, and by the time water gets in, a whole run is loose.
As slate roofers, we look for the cause, not just the gap. A single slipped slate can be refixed with a tingle. Widespread nail sickness on one slope means stripping it, keeping the sound slates, replacing the rest and relaying on new membrane and battens.
We use Welsh slate and good reclaimed slate where it suits the roof, so new work sits comfortably alongside the houses next door.

Slate across Salford's terraces
Most of the Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Seedley, Weaste, Pendleton and Broughton were built with natural slate. Look along a street and you'll often see a patchwork: some roofs re-slated, some switched to concrete tiles, some still original. Whether you want to keep the original look or simply stop a leak, matching size and colour matters, especially on a long terrace where one odd roof stands out.
We work on slate roofs across Salford, Eccles and Swinton, and into Prestwich and Worsley, covering M3, M5, M6, M7, M27, M28 and M30. Being about 2 miles from our Manchester office means Salford gets the same quick service as the city centre. In a conservation area, check with Salford City Council before changing from natural slate.
Signs your slate roof needs work
From the street, look for slates that have slipped out of line, gaps showing the felt or battens, lots of metal tingles across the roof (a sign of repeated repairs), and moss building up in the joints. Inside, daylight showing in the loft or damp patches on top-floor ceilings are the giveaways.
If you're seeing more than a handful of slipped slates each winter, it's usually nail sickness. A free survey will show whether a slope-by-slope re-slate makes more sense than yet more tingles.
Slate roof questions from Salford
What is nail sickness on a slate roof?
It's when the nails holding slates to the battens corrode and snap, even though the slates themselves may be fine. It's common on Salford's older terraces, where original iron nails have been in place for generations. The tell-tale sign is slates slipping in different places at once. The lasting fix is re-slating on new fixings.
Is Welsh slate worth paying more for?
Welsh slate has a long track record on Manchester roofs and is what many of Salford's terraces were built with, so it matches well. Imported slate can be good value but quality varies. Carefully sorted reclaimed Welsh slate is a solid middle ground. We'll go through the options and costs with you before you choose.
Can you replace my concrete tiles with slate?
Yes, and some owners of Salford terraces do it to bring back the original look of the street. Natural slate is generally lighter than concrete tile, so the structure is rarely a problem, but the battens are set out differently and the job is effectively a full re-roof. We'll survey and quote for it on that basis.
Why are there small metal strips on my slate roof?
Those are tingles: small copper or lead strips used to hold a replacement slate in place where the original nail can't be reached. A few are perfectly normal. A roof covered in them tells you slates have been slipping for years, and that a re-slate on new fixings is probably due.
Do you repair lead valleys on slate roofs?
Yes. Valleys carry a lot of water, and old lead can split from expansion and contraction or be poorly lapped. We replace lead in the right sizes with proper laps, and where a valley has been patched with mortar or bitumen in the past, we take that out and do it properly so it stays watertight.
Can you re-slate one side of my roof rather than both?
Yes. On a terrace it's common to re-slate just the front or the rear slope, usually whichever takes the worst of the weather. We'll check both slopes during the free survey and tell you what needs doing now and what can safely wait, so you can plan the budget.
