A slate roofer in Chorlton for period roofs
Natural slate is the signature roof of Chorlton. Rows of Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis still carry it, and a well-kept slate roof can serve for many decades. As a slate roofer in Chorlton, we repair slipped and broken slates, renew lead valleys and flashings, and re-slate roofs that have reached the end of their life.
The key to slate work on period homes is matching. Size, colour and thickness all vary, and a mismatched repair stands out on a terrace. We use new Welsh slate or quality reclaimed slate to blend in.
We have more than 20 years' experience, full insurance and guaranteed work. Inspections and quotes are free.

Slate roofs across Chorlton
Chorlton's Edwardian and Victorian terraces and semis are mostly slate-roofed, and many have dormer loft conversions where the dormer meets the slate. Those junctions, along with rusted nails and worn valleys, are where many slate problems start. For homes in conservation areas, Manchester City Council may expect natural slate to be kept, so check before changing materials.
We work on slate roofs across M21, including Chorlton Green, Chorlton Park, Whalley Range, Stretford, Didsbury and Firswood. Being about 3 miles from our Manchester office means Chorlton gets the same quick service as the city centre.
When repairs turn into re-slating
A few slipped slates can be refixed quickly. But if slates are slipping across the whole roof, the original nails have probably rusted through, and the underlay may be failing too. At that point, re-slating is usually better value than repeated repairs.
We'll inspect the slates, battens and underlay, and explain which route we'd take and why. Call 0800 046 1159 to book a free inspection.
Slate roof questions in Chorlton
How can I tell if my slates have nail fatigue?
If slates are slipping in random places across the whole roof, rather than in one area after a storm, nail fatigue is the likely cause. It's common on older Chorlton roofs. Clipping slates back helps for a while, but more will follow, so re-slating is often the lasting fix.
Can you match slates on a terraced street?
Yes. We check the size, colour and thickness of your existing slates and source a close match, either new Welsh slate or reclaimed slate. Keeping the street looking consistent is important on period terraces.
My dormer leaks where it meets the slate. Can you fix it?
Yes. The flashing and soakers where dormer cheeks meet the slate are common leak points. We remove surrounding slates, renew the lead and refix the slates neatly, so the junction is watertight again.
Is reclaimed slate as good as new?
Good-quality reclaimed slate can be excellent: it's already weathered to match older roofs and has plenty of life left. We check each slate carefully and reject any that are cracked, thin or flaking.
Do you do slate repairs on bay window roofs?
Yes. Many Victorian and Edwardian bays have small slate roofs with lead flashings to the main wall. We repair slipped slates and renew the lead where needed.
Can moss damage a slate roof?
Heavy moss can lift slates slightly, hold moisture and block gutters and valleys. We can remove it where it's causing problems. Light moss is common and often harmless, so we won't recommend work unless it's needed.
