A slate roofer in Hazel Grove for repairs and re-slating
Hazel Grove is better known for tiled semis than slate, but the older terraces along the A6 and some of the earlier houses around the village tell a different story. Where slate survives, it deserves a roofer who knows how to work with it. Our slate roofs in Hazel Grove service covers single slipped slates right through to full re-slating.
Good slate lasts a very long time. What usually fails first is the nails holding it, which rust through and let slates slide out of place. The result is a gap in the roof, a slate in the gutter and a 'tingle' repair waiting to happen.
We'll always look at repairs before suggesting a re-slate. Quotes are free, all work is guaranteed and we've been roofing for over 20 years.

Slate roofing services

Roof stripped, new membrane and battens laid, and sound slates reused or new Welsh slate fitted.
Reclaimed slate matching
Second-hand slate sourced to match size, colour and thickness so repairs blend in.
Lead valleys and flashings
Worn lead valleys and abutment flashings renewed, a common source of leaks on older slate roofs.
Slate in a mostly tiled town
Most of Hazel Grove's housing is 1930s semis and post-war estates with concrete tiles, so slate roofs here tend to be on the older terraces along the A6 and other earlier buildings. Those roofs have often had piecemeal repairs over the years, sometimes with odd slates or even a concrete tile dropped in. We'll repair them properly with matching slate so the roof works as a whole again.
We work on slate roofs across SK7 and the nearby districts, including Bramhall, Offerton, High Lane, Norbury and Torkington, plus Stockport and Heaton Moor where slate is more common. Being about 9 miles from our Manchester office means Hazel Grove gets the same quick service as the city centre. In a conservation area, check with Stockport Council before changing roof materials.
Repair or re-slate: how we decide
We look at how many slates have slipped, whether the slates themselves are flaking or delaminating, and what the battens and underlay are like. A few slipped slates on an otherwise sound roof is a repair. Widespread nail failure, lots of tingles already in place and slates sliding every winter point towards re-slating.
When we re-slate, we'll salvage good slates where possible and top up with new or reclaimed slate. You'll get a written quote that sets out the options so you can choose.
Slate roof questions for Hazel Grove
What are the metal clips holding some of my slates?
They're called tingles, a standard way of refixing a slipped slate without stripping the slates above it. Lots of them on one roof usually means the original nails are failing everywhere. One or two is normal; dozens suggests the roof is heading towards a re-slate.
Can a concrete tile patch on my slate roof be put right?
Yes. Mixing materials can look odd and may not lap properly with the slates around it. We can remove the tiles and slate the area with matching reclaimed or new slate so it sheds water like the rest of the roof.
Is Welsh slate worth the extra over imported slate?
Welsh slate has a long track record and matches many older roofs in the area well. Good-quality imported slate can also perform well. The right choice depends on your budget, the look you want and whether you're matching neighbouring roofs. We'll show you options and explain the difference.
Why are my slates flaking at the edges?
That's usually delamination, where the slate is breaking down in layers after many decades of weather. A few flaky slates can be replaced. If it's widespread, the slate is near the end of its life, and re-slating with new material may be the better long-term choice.
Can you replace a leaking lead valley on a slate roof?
Yes. Lead valleys wear thin, crack or creep over time, and they carry a lot of water. We lift the slates either side, renew the valley boards and lead, and relay the slates. It's a common repair on older roofs.
Will you reuse my original slates if I re-roof?
Where they're sound, yes. Reusing good slates keeps the character of the house. We sort them during stripping, keep the best for the front elevation and make up any shortfall with matching reclaimed or new slate. Original slates on the front help the house keep its period look.
