Slate roofs in Farnworth: keeping the terraces watertight
The red-brick terraces that make up so much of Farnworth were nearly all roofed in slate, and much of that slate is still up there. It is a hard-wearing material, but after a hundred years or more the nails give out, valleys wear through and slates begin to slide. Repairing and re-slating slate roofs in Farnworth is everyday work for us.
Slate needs handling with care. It cracks if walked on, it should never be patched with tiles, and replacement slates need to match in size and thickness to sit properly. Done right, a slate roof will keep going for many more years.
We repair, re-slate and renew the lead that slate roofs depend on.

Slate on Farnworth's terraces
On Farnworth's terraces, slipped slates, worn valleys and chimney flashing are the problems we see most. Back slopes with outriggers and valleys tend to wear first. Because terraces share ridges and party walls, repairs need to tie in neatly with neighbouring roofs, and matching the slate keeps the street looking consistent.
Our slate roofers cover BL4, including Kearsley, Moses Gate, Little Lever, Walkden and Highfield, and the wider Bolton area. Being about 8 miles from our Manchester office means Farnworth gets the same quick service as the city centre.
Repair, or time to re-slate?
If a few slates have slipped and the rest are holding firm, individual repairs are the right call. If slates are coming loose across the roof every winter, the nails have probably failed everywhere, and re-slating will save money in the long run.
We survey for free, show you what we find and give you a written quote with no hidden fees. All work is fully insured and guaranteed.
Slate roof questions in Farnworth
Why do slates keep slipping on my terrace?
Most often the original nails have corroded through, so the slate has nothing holding it. This is called nail fatigue. One or two slipped slates can be refixed, but if more keep appearing, it means the nails are failing across the roof.
Can you re-slate just the back of my terrace?
Yes. Rear slopes often wear faster because of valleys, outriggers and less sun. Re-slating one slope is a common job, and we make sure the ridge and the join with the front slope are properly finished.
Is Welsh slate worth the extra cost?
Welsh slate is very durable and often the best match for an original North West terrace roof. Reclaimed Welsh slate can be a cost-effective option. We can price different slate choices so you can compare.
What is a valley on a terraced roof?
It is the channel where two roof slopes meet, often between the main roof and a back extension. It is usually lined with lead or formed in mortar, and it carries a lot of water. Worn valleys are a very common source of leaks on Farnworth terraces.
Can a slate roof be repaired with concrete tiles?
It should not be. Tiles and slates are different shapes and thicknesses, and mixing them creates gaps where water gets in. A slate roof should always be repaired with matching slate.
Should I worry about moss on my slates?
Light moss is mostly cosmetic, but thick moss holds water and blocks gutters. It should be removed carefully by hand, not jet washed, which can damage slate. We can check the roof for slipped or cracked slates while we are up there.
