Roof replacement in Castleford when repairs stop making sense
There comes a point with every roof where you are paying for repair after repair and the leaks keep moving. If that sounds familiar, a new roof in Castleford may cost less in the long run than another few years of patching. We strip the old covering back to the rafters and rebuild it properly, so the roof is sound for decades rather than seasons.
Many of the post-war roofs around Castleford are now reaching the end of their working life. The concrete tiles themselves often look fine from the street, but underneath the felt has perished, battens have rotted and the mortar ridge is breaking up. The older terraced slate roofs often suffer from nail fatigue, where the slates are sound but can no longer be held in place.
Every re-roof starts with a free survey and a written quote. We are fully insured, have over 20 years' experience and guarantee all work.

What a Castleford re-roof includes
Full strip
Old tiles or slates, felt and battens removed, and the rafters checked and repaired where needed.
Breathable membrane
A modern breathable underlay to keep the roof watertight and help reduce condensation in the loft.
New battens and covering
Fresh treated battens, then new tiles or slate, or sound slates reused where that makes sense.
Dry ridge and verge
Mechanically fixed ridge and verge systems that don't rely on mortar to stay put.
Re-roofing Castleford's terraces and post-war homes
On Castleford's older terraced streets the usual question is whether to re-slate in natural slate or switch to tiles. Natural slate keeps the look of the street and is lighter on old timbers. On the post-war estates, most people replace like for like with modern concrete or clay tiles, sometimes upgrading to a dry ridge and better ventilation at the same time.
We replace roofs across WF10, including Whitwood, Glasshoughton, Airedale and Allerton Bywater, and over in Pontefract. Castleford is covered by our Yorkshire team, who work across Leeds, York, Malton and the surrounding towns. If you are in a conservation area, check with Wakefield Council before changing the roof material.
Timescales and guide costs
A typical house re-roof usually takes 2 to 5 days depending on size and weather. Scaffolding goes up first, then we strip and re-cover one section at a time so the house is never left open overnight. If rain is forecast, the roof is sheeted and secured.
Cost depends on the size and pitch of the roof, the material you choose, chimney and roofline work, and access. We give you a fixed written quote after a survey, with no hidden fees, so you know exactly what you are paying before work starts.
New roof questions from Castleford
How do I know if I need a new roof or just repairs?
Repeated leaks in different places, sagging between rafters, lots of slipping slates or cracked tiles, and perished felt you can see from the loft all suggest the whole roof is tired. If faults are isolated and the structure is sound, repairs are fine. We will tell you which applies after a survey.
Can you reuse my existing slates?
Sometimes. If the slates themselves are sound and the problem is rusted nails or rotten battens, good slates can be cleaned, sorted and relaid, topped up with matching reclaimed ones. If many are cracked or delaminating, new slate is the better option.
Can I switch from slate to concrete tiles?
Usually you can, but concrete tiles are heavier, so the roof timbers need checking first. In a conservation area there may be restrictions. We will look at the structure and explain the pros and cons before you decide.
Will a new roof make my loft warmer?
A new roof itself mainly keeps water out, but it is the perfect time to improve loft insulation and ventilation. A breathable membrane and proper airflow help control condensation, which can be an issue when insulation is added.
What happens to chimneys and gutters during a re-roof?
We look at them as part of the survey. It makes sense to repoint stacks and renew lead flashing while the scaffold is up, and to replace tired fascias and gutters at the same time. Doing it together saves on access later.
Can I stay in the house while the roof is replaced?
Yes. Most people live at home throughout. We work in sections and weatherproof the roof at the end of each day. There will be some noise and some dust in the loft, so it is worth moving anything stored up there.
