Chimney repair in Reddish

A chimney stack is often the most exposed part of a house, and in Reddish many of them have been standing since the terraces were built. Our chimney repair in Reddish service covers repointing, lead flashing, flaunching, caps, cowls, rebuilds and removals.

Failed chimney flashing is one of the most common sources of roof leaks we find. It's easy to mistake for a problem with the slates or tiles, so we always check the stack when tracing a leak nearby.

We give free quotes, we're fully insured and all of our chimney work is guaranteed.

Chimneys on Reddish's terraces and semis

Reddish's mill-era terraces tend to have tall, shared stacks rising through slate roofs, while inter-war and post-war semis usually have a stack on the party wall between the pair. Most were built for open fires that are no longer used. Those disused flues are often open at the top and blocked at the bottom, which can lead to damp chimney breasts as well as weathered brickwork outside.

We repair chimneys across SK5, including North Reddish, South Reddish, Heaton Chapel and Brinnington, as well as in Denton. Our Manchester office (M4) is only around 5 miles away, so Reddish is well inside our regular patch.

Signs your chimney needs attention

Look out for damp patches on a chimney breast, crumbling mortar, loose pots, cracked flaunching or a stack that appears to lean. Pieces of brick or mortar in the gutter are another warning sign.

Call 0800 046 1159 and we'll inspect the chimney from safe access, explain what's wrong and give you a written quote. If it's unsafe, we'll make it secure first.

Chimney questions from Reddish

Can I take down a chimney I don't use?

Often, yes. Removing a stack below roof level gets rid of a maintenance job and a common leak point. On a shared stack you'll need to agree it with your neighbour. If you're unsure whether any restrictions apply, check with Stockport Council before work starts.

Why is water coming in around my chimney?

The usual causes are failed lead flashing, cracked flaunching on top of the stack, or porous brickwork. On older terraces, the flashing may have been replaced with mortar fillets at some point, which crack over time. We'll find the cause and fix it properly.

What does repointing a chimney involve?

We rake out the old, weakened mortar from between the bricks and replace it with fresh mortar. This keeps water out of the brickwork and stops frost damage. Any damaged bricks are replaced at the same time.

Do I need scaffolding for chimney work?

Usually. Chimney repairs involve working at height around the stack, so safe access is essential. We'll include scaffolding or other access in your quote.

Can a cowl stop my chimney breast getting damp?

It can help. A ventilated cowl keeps rain out of an unused flue while letting it breathe. Combined with a vent lower down in the room, it's often enough to dry out a damp chimney breast.

Should I repair or rebuild a leaning chimney?

A leaning stack usually needs taking down to sound brickwork and rebuilding, as repointing alone won't straighten it. We'll inspect it and explain the safest option. Original bricks are reused where possible.
