Chimney repairs in Cheadle Hulme, from repointing to rebuilds
Some of the most distinctive chimneys in this part of Stockport sit on Cheadle Hulme's larger Edwardian and inter-war houses: tall stacks, often more than one per house, with decorative brickwork and several pots. They look great. They also take a beating from the weather, and when they fail they tend to cause leaks that are hard to pin down.
Our chimney repair work covers repointing, lead flashings, haunching, capping and cowls, and rebuilding stacks that have become unsafe. We can also remove stacks that are no longer needed and make good the roof.

Chimneys on Cheadle Hulme houses
On the older houses in Cheadle Hulme and Bramhall, chimneys often sit in the middle of complicated roofs, with valleys and hips running up to them. That makes the flashing details more involved than on a simple terrace. On 1960s and 70s homes, the stacks are plainer, but many were built with less robust pots and mortar, and fifty-odd years of weather has taken its toll.
We repair chimneys across Cheadle Hulme, Cheadle, Heald Green, Gatley and Woodford, and in nearby Heaton Moor and Hazel Grove. Our Manchester office (M4) is only around 8 miles away, so Cheadle Hulme is well inside our regular patch. If your home is in a conservation area, check with Stockport Council before removing or significantly altering a visible stack.
When to get your chimney checked
Get it looked at if you notice damp on a chimney breast or in an upstairs corner, brown staining on wallpaper near the stack, mortar crumbs in the gutters, or pots or stacks that look out of line. Chimneys are also worth checking whenever you have scaffolding up for other roof work, because access is the most expensive part of chimney repair.
Once we've inspected, we'll explain what's needed and quote in writing. If the stack is shared with an attached neighbour, which happens on semis, we can quote for the whole stack so it's simple to split.
Chimney questions from Cheadle Hulme
Why is my chimney breast damp when the fire isn't used?
Unused chimneys still let in rain through open pots, porous brickwork and failing pointing, and a capped flue without ventilation can trap moisture that soaks into the breast. Both are common on Cheadle Hulme's older houses. We'll inspect the stack from above and suggest capping, repointing or reflashing, depending on what we find.
Can you fit a cowl to stop birds nesting in my chimney?
Yes. Birds nesting in pots is a common nuisance, and a nest can block a flue you need for a stove or gas appliance. We fit cowls and bird guards to suit the pot and the flue's use. If the flue serves an appliance, the cowl must be the right type, so tell us what's connected.
My chimney stack has cracks in it. Is it dangerous?
Hairline cracks in pointing aren't usually urgent, but cracks running through bricks, a visible lean, or loose pots can be. A tall stack on a larger house carries a lot of weight above head height. If you're worried about anything falling, call our 24/7 emergency line and we'll advise on making it safe.
Should I keep or remove a chimney on my 1970s house?
If you don't use it and it needs work, removing it below the roofline and tiling over the gap ends future maintenance. If it's part of the look of the house, or you might fit a stove later, keeping and repairing it makes sense. We can price both so you can compare.
How is lead flashing fitted around a chimney?
Lead is fitted in sections: an apron at the front, soakers or step flashing up the sides, and a back gutter behind the stack where water collects. Each piece is tucked into the mortar joints and dressed over the roof covering. Shortcuts with sealant or mortar fillets are what usually fail, so we do it properly in lead.
Can chimney work be done at the same time as a re-roof?
It's the ideal time. Scaffolding is already up, the roof covering around the stack is coming off anyway, and new lead flashings can be fitted into the new roof properly. If you're planning a re-roof, ask us to include the chimney in the survey.
